What is Acudetox?

by Alex Murphy

Our mental health is supported and impacted by more than just how we think. We are embodied persons. Toward this end, AcuWellness (Acudetox) is a valuable adjunct treatment that entails a 5-point acupuncture treatment with the ears. AcuWellness impacts parts of the body related to stress and trauma and its downstream effects are helpful for many different concerns.

Clients receiving treatment have consistently reported:

  • Increased Relaxation

  • Stress Reduction

  • Increased Mental Clarity

  • Increased Sense of Wellbeing

  • Better Sleep

  • More Energy

  • Better Appetite

  • Craving Reduction (for substance and behavioral addiction concerns)

  • Withdrawal Symptom Reduction (substance abuse related)

Acudetox is an auricular acupuncture protocol developed by Dr. Michael Smith in 1974. In 1985 the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was founded and began training practitioners. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) endorse it as an effective complementary treatment.

Many studies point toward it being effective for:

  • Headaches

  • Trauma and PTSD symptoms

  • Insomnia

  • Depression/Anxiety

  • Bipolar

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Chronic Pain

  • Chemical addiction and addictive behaviors (process addictions)

Does it hurt? Acupuncture needles come in a variety of forms. Those used in this treatment are small and very thin. You will feel a pinch in their placement, but once they are administered people often find deep relaxation - some even fall asleep! Treatments take between 30-45 minutes.
